Universal Thirst is a type foundry that specializes in Indic and Latin scripts. It was set up in 2016 by designer and engineer duo Gunnar Vilhjálmsson and Kalapi Gajjar, who draw on their contrasting visual heritage to offer a unique, dual perspective on type.Universal Thirst creates distinctive retail and bespoke typefaces tailored for both local and international brands, particularly those doing business in South Asia.

Joana Ranito is a type designer based in Porto, Portugal. After working as a web designer and front-end developer, Joana completed an MA in Typeface Design at the University of Reading in 2017, where she developed a lasting interest in multi-script type design and Indic scripts. She went on to work with Dalton Maag as a font developer and team manager, before joining Universal Thirst in 2021. Joana enjoys drawing from life, and has transferred these skills over to her multi-script design practice.

Namrata Goyal is a type designer based in Alwar, India. After a short stint as a graphic designer at Fitch, in Bombay, she joined Indian Typeface Foundry in 2014. She pursued her love of type with a condensed course in Typeface Design at TypeAtCooper in New York, and in 2017 completed a thesis project exploring newspaper types and multiscript typography at TypeMedia at the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague, Netherlands. Namrata has been working with Universal Thirst since 2016, primarily focusing on North Indian and Latin scripts. She publishes independent projects on FutureFonts, and when she’s not at her desk enjoys carving letters in stone and conducting type workshops.

Salomi Desai is a type designer based in Mumbai, India. After graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2014, Salomi focused on branding and packaging projects in her home city, catering to both local and global brands. An interest in customising letters led to a year of work experience at font foundry Mota Italic, before studying type design at Ésad in Amiens, France – which culminated in a Latin and Devanagari editorial typeface. Salomi joined Universal Thirst as a type designer in 2021, focusing on both Latin and Indic projects as well as the Universal Thirst Gazette. She has been listed as a Woman of Typographic Excellence by the Malee Scholarship and her work has earned a certificate of merit from the Gerard Unger Scholarship.

Ilai is a modern interpretation of 60s psychedelia. The design can speak in many different voices, from an elegant monoline to a deliciously top- or bottom-heavy weight. It can be clean and simple, or uncompromisingly quirky in its expression. The heavier versions offer a futuristic interpretation of psychedelic shapes, with the letterforms resembling slow-moving fluid or puddles of ink.

Meursault is a graceful headline typeface based on a popular 20th-century style, but with a few quirky twists. It’s a typeface that echoes a design used widely in the early 20th century, born from the burgeoning Arts and Crafts movement.

Ouma is an award-winning typeface named after the first interstellar object detected passing through our solar system, Oumuamua. Incorporating both conventional and inventive letterforms with a hint of monospace melody, Ouma supports Latin and Devanagari scripts.

Seismic is an experimental variable typeface that takes the traditional Bengali script in a new direction. Seismic is a modern interpretation of the Bengali script, with shapes left purposefully irregular to mimic the shivering movement of the ground during an earthquake.
